Most people when they have an idea, whether it’s for a business, podcast or anything else, dive right in. And months down the line when they figure out their idea sucks, it’s too late.
We are going to do one extra step before we start our podcast.
We are going to test our idea so that we can practically guarantee it will be a success.

Your 1,000 True Fans
You are going to sit down (or Skype) with as many mini-audience members as you can and ask them questions to understand who they are and what they want. You will figure out their problems, ambitions and challenges so that you can develop a podcast that people value.
Consider this your first interview ;)
I’m giving you a set of questions to begin with:
- What Podcasts / YouTube channels do you listen to?
- Why do you listen / watch these?
- Where do you listen / consume your media? (in the car, during training, late at night?…)
- What websites do you regularly check / visit?
- What Influencers do you like / listen to?
- What are your biggest goals / dreams / aspirations?
- When it comes to “topic”, what is your single biggest challenge?
Use these questions, but formulate a few of your own too if you can.
I recommend booking all your interviews on one day for this exercise.
Once you have finished all your conversations it’s time to fill out your True Fan Template.

Your Competition
Any great innovation is build on remixing existing ideas.
This section is all about understanding what already exists in your market, and finding out how you can be different.
- You will take 3 common keywords about your podcast and search these in Google and Itunes (a podcast about passion will use terms like “passion”, “potential” or “talent” for instance)
- Then, you will research the podcasts and websites your mini-audience talked about in your interviews. When researching podcasts it is not necessary to listen to full interviews, although checking out the first 5 to 10 minutes of an episode will help.

Your Prototype
Based on your research with your mini-audience and competition, you will create a prototype. You will give potential listeners an overview of what your podcast will look like on the outside before creating a single episode. This will help you understand whether your podcast idea will interest people or not.
In order to do this you are going to list 10 juicy episode titles.
Some things to consider:
- The titles must be compelling. You can inspire on the titles and descriptions you wrote in your notebook in the previous section.
- Guest names in the title are optional, but not necessary. Select guests that are easy wins for you. No Johnny Depp, Elon Musk or Conor McGregor yet.
In case you can’t come up with any good titles, here are some formulas to create some strong ones. These are just optional, you don’t need to stick to them.
And in case you really have no idea, just start your headline with “how to…” these have been proven to always work very well.

Learn to Move Like Ido Portal – Without Any of the Injuries!Your prototype doesn’t have to be perfect, just good enough for people to understand what you are going to do.
Next, you are showing your list of 10 episodes to some people of your mini-audience. You can do this through skype, but I recommend to do it face-to-face.
IMPORTANT: You are NOT looking for approval, but genuine honest feedback, if it’s good it’s good, if it’s bad you must take notice. We are here to improve the concept, not confirm it.
Ask them to read the episode titles aloud so you can follow their train of thought.
Some questions to ask your mini-audience:
- What is their general opinion? (try to lead the conversation to go deeper on the points they make)
- What is the 10% they love?
- What is the 10% they really don’t like?
Use this feedback to improve your podcast idea. Most likely it will be a small success with some adjustments.
